About Laconia, New Hampshire

Laconia, New Hampshire, was established as a town in 1855 and became a city in 1893. Its name is derived from a region in Greece. Located between the Merrimack River and the Sagadahoc River, the area was originally settled in 1761 and was first known as Meredith Bridge. Laconia includes the villages of Lakeport and Weirs Beach. In 1840, it became the county seat of the newly formed Belknap County.

The arrival of the railroad in 1849 helped boost the popularity of Weirs Beach as a tourist destination, a status it retains today with attractions like an amusement arcade, bumper cars, cruises, and scenic railroad rides along the original tracks. Laconia also hosts the annual Motorcycle Week each June, one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the country. In the winter, the city is home to the Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby.
