In the New Hampshire Lakes Region, our patio installation services frequently serve as the focal point for the hardscapes we create. While retaining walls level the ground, and landscape lighting and granite steps provide safe access, the focus of our outdoor living design process is centered around the patio. The lifestyle questions that we ask our clients help to guide us towards building in those elements that will enable them to get the most enjoyment out of their patio.
Whether large or small, for entertaining or quiet retreat, patios are the outdoor destination point that draws us out of our home and into the yard.
Small Patio Design
More often than not, lakefront living lends itself to small patio design. Shoreline properties are smaller and often pitched towards the water. Designing small patios can be more challenging than designing larger ones. Because space is limited, choosing which elements to embellish the space is also limited. The key to successful small patio design is knowing the primary purpose of what the space will be used for. It’s not unusual for a lakefront property to have several small patios each with its own purpose.
Patios for Entertaining
When the purpose of a patio is entertaining, we design-in elements that draw people together. Outdoor kitchens and pizza ovens help keep the food and fun moving without having to continually run back into the house. Wood or gas fire pits provide a place to gather around for comfort and conversation. When designing patios for entertaining, we will often include a landscape lighting option for safety and ambiance.
Stone or Paver Patio?
Once the layout is completed, the next phase is to pick out patio materials. At Groundhog Landscaping, our hardscape crew is experienced in installing both paver patios and natural stone patios.
Choosing patio materials is a matter of personal preference. The wide selection of patterns and colors available is an advantage of installing concrete pavers; irregular bluestone patios built from locally-sourced stone always integrate nicely with the natural beauty of the New Hampshire lakes region.
Our concrete paver patios are installed on a free-draining, permeable stone base.
A free-draining aggregate base ensures maximum stability for the life of the patio. Permeable paver patios and driveways can be a great option for new construction lakefront properties, which are often subject to restrictions on how much non-permeable surfaces can cover their property. Building a permeable paver driveway instead of asphalt one can give more options for the site construction, such as allowing a larger footprint for the home’s foundation.
