About New Hampton, New Hampshire

New Hampton is a picturesque town located in Belknap County, New Hampshire. Known for its appeal as a winter sports destination, the town is home to the scenic George Duncan State Forest and the New Hampton School, a private preparatory academy founded in 1821. The town’s central village lies along New Hampshire Route 132, just south of its intersection with Route 104.

History

Originally granted in 1765 by colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, the area was first called “Moultonborough Addition” in honor of Colonel Jonathan Moulton, who served as town moderator. A native of Hampton, Moulton later renamed the town “New Hampton” when it was incorporated in 1777. The New Hampton School was established in 1821 as a Free Will Baptist institution. Between 1854 and 1870, it maintained an academic affiliation with the Cobb Divinity School, which would later become part of Bates College.
