The Nitty-Gritty on Gravels

“WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GRAVEL AND STONE?”

We hear this a lot. At Groundhog, the way we generally distinguish between the two is:

  • GRAVEL has sand and fines in it.
  • STONE is a free-draining product.

If you’re not familiar with purchasing gravel products, here is a brief description of our aggregates:

Also known as “crushed base” or “processed gravel,” crushed gravel is a compatible aggregate used as a base for road construction, patios, walkways, and foundations. Although it compacts well, it also drains because we allow only a limited percentage of fines in the product.
Available sizes: ¾” and 1½”

Crushed stone is a sharp-edged, free-draining aggregate used for drainage and decorative purposes, such as foundation planting beds and parking areas.
Available sizes: ⅜”, ¾”, 1½”

River Stone is a smooth, free-draining natural product harvested from stream beds or sifted from the ground. It has a comfortable feel underfoot and an earthy tone, making it ideal for landscaping where appearance and foot traffic matter.

Also known as “rip rap” or “rap stone,” erosion stone is a larger version of crushed stone used for earth retention and drainage swales.
Size range: 2” to 6”

Also called “concrete sand,” this is a coarser grade used under patios and in mortar mixes. It’s free-draining, and stones down to ¼” in size are removed through screening.
